Overview

Nationwide needed to stand out in a crowded student banking market, competing against high-value cash offers from both traditional banks and fintech challengers.

We created a disruptive acquisition proposition that replaced part of the cash incentive with £120 in takeaway vouchers - tapping into everyday student behaviour, delivering greater perceived value and ongoing engagement.

The Challenge

Winning student customers is about more than securing an account opening. Banks are competing for the opportunity to establish relationships with customers at the beginning of their financial journey, making the student market particularly valuable and particularly crowded.

Nationwide was competing against established banks and fintech challengers offering high-value cash incentives. Increasing the monetary reward would have meant entering an escalating battle for attention, with little to distinguish one offer from another.

The challenge was therefore to create a proposition capable of cutting through on perceived value without increasing cost.

Why TLC

Nationwide needed a partner capable of looking beyond the conventions of student banking and understanding what would genuinely motivate its audience.

With more than three decades of experience designing acquisition and engagement programs, TLC brought together audience insight, strategic thinking and lifestyle-led rewards to create a proposition grounded in student behaviour.

Rather than treating the reward as an add-on, TLC helped make it central to the acquisition strategy. The takeaways vouchers complemented Nationwide's existing cash incentive while creating greater perceived value and more opportunities for continued engagement.

The TLC Approach

Students are highly price-conscious, but driven by lifestyle. Our insight showed food was the most compelling reward, with takeaway forming a regular part of student life.

Rather than increasing cash incentives, we rebalanced the offer to combine £100 cash with £120 in takeaway vouchers, creating a stronger value proposition without increasing cost.

To maximise impact, vouchers were distributed monthly, maintaining engagement over time and keeping Nationwide front of mind.
We activated the campaign across digital, social and on-campus channels, including Freshers’ Week experiences that brought the proposition to life in a way that felt relevant, visible and authentic for our Gen Z audience.
